Nobel Prize 2020 Awarded to Roger Penrose, Andrea M. Ghez, and Reinhard Genzel for
their pioneering work on black holes and Milky Way’s darkest secret.
Roger
Penrose, Andrea M. Ghez, and Reinhard Genzel have been awarded the 2020 Nobel
Prize in Physics for their pioneering work on space involving the black holes
and the Milky Way’s darkest secret.
What
is black hole?
Black
hole is a region of space time where gravity is so strong that nothing-no
particles or even electromagnetic radiation such as light- can escape from it.
This theory general relativity predicts that a sufficiently compact mass can
deform space time to form black hole.
The
Academy said Roger Penrose was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics “for the
discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general
theory of relativity”.
Reinhard
Genzel and Andrea Ghez jointly won the second half of the prize, awarded “for
the discovery of a super massive compact object at the centre of our galaxy”,
the academy said.
